Performance Appraisal Interview

 1.     How long does a single performance appraisal typically take? (Kate)

It just depends, on average I would say they take about 10 minutes, but some times you get employees with a lot of questions or what have you and those ones can take longer.

2.     How often do you conduct performance appraisals? (Kate)

Umm we do them every quarter.

3.     Tell me about an experience when you had to discipline an employee. (Kate)

I had to discipline an employee for not following policy and procedures, this employee violated the policy and procedures multiple times which I had to write them up for.

4.     What is your least favorite thing about performance appraisals? (Jaimie)

Probably the paperwork involved, that is always annoying. I love getting together with my employees one on one but it is hard when I have to discipline someone.

5.     Do you feel that performance appraisals evaluate an employee's performance accurately? (Jaimie). Yeah, I do, most of the time.

6.     Do you ever have employees evaluate themselves first before you conduct a performance appraisal on them? (Jaimie). That’s a great idea but I have never done that.

7.     Do performance appraisal interviews affect the raises of your employees? (Megan)

Yes, it is part of the paper work trail as well, when it comes to raises.

8.     What things do you focus on when performing a performance appraisal? (Megan)

How well they are accomplishing the tasks expected of them, their time clock, how they are fitting in with the team, things they may need to work on, and what they are great at.

9.     What questions do you ask your employees during performance appraisals? (Megan)

I like to start out talking to them in I guess, a normal way, just some casual conversation. The questions are usually focused around what we are working on as a whole that quarter so it changes. I also always ask what I can do to help them be more successful.

10.   What do you like/dislike about conducting performance appraisals? (Madi) already answered this on number 4.

11.  Can you tell me about a time when you saw significant improvement from a particular employee because of a performance appraisal? (Madi)

I can’t really think of a significant time, that is a good question though.

12.  Do you feel like conducting performance appraisals helps you personally to be a better worker? (Madi) I feel like it does in a sense, its always good to get another person’s point of view, right? I only see what I see and learning more about my employees and how they expereince work is always eye opening.

13.  Are there things that other people care about during a performance appraisal that you are more lenient with? (Madeline) Not that I can think of.

14.  If a performance appraisal of an employee turns out badly, do you give them a time frame in which to improve? (Madeline) Yeah, well it just depends…if they have been written up multiple times, they are most likely not going to change. But most of the time, yes.

15.  Do employees usually handle feedback well from their performance appraisals? (Madeline) They usually do, I think performance appraisals really are a great tool to help everyone involved work better together.

I learned how much work these performance evaluations can be for the person conducting them and I have new found respect for them. My manager will even come in at night to get the night shift employees done which is super nice because then we don’t have to come in at another time. I interviewed Jon Howard at Vasa Fitness

Reflection week 5

  1.  What did you actually learned from the unit. I found the lectures interesting this week, there is so much to the management side of nursing that I don't always think about so it was interesting to think about that point of view.  2. Discuss your feelings/experiences from the team activities? Did it change your opinion on the subject? If so, how? If not, why? Sometimes it can be hard to gauge the team activities just because we all do them at different times during the week. I work Saturday, Sunday and Monday nights, therefor I do most of my homework at the beginning of the week. I think a lot of my teammates wait until the weekend to do their homework and so I don't always get to learn from their opinions in that aspect.  3. How you will utilize the information learned in your nursing practice. I think next time I meet with my manager for my quarterly review I will have more respect for the concepts and why they are utilized.  4. You personal feelings...

Leadership Characteristics

  1.    Leadership requires personal mastery   – Nurses demonstrate leadership when they show competence and mastery in the tasks they perform. Nurses are deemed competent by means of a license to practice nursing (NLN 2010). 2.   Leadership is about values  – A leader has to have values, those they are leading follow these values  and learn from their leaders.  3.    Leadership is about service  – Not only are you serving patients, you are serving as a go to for your team of employees.  4.    Leadership is about people and relationships  – If you don't have a good relationship with your peers, you team, the people around you, your workplace will be miserable. If the charge nurse for the shift doesn't have a good relationship with his/her peers, the team will not function well and has potential to impact patient care.  5.     Leadership is contextual  – relating what you're doing in ...
