Reflection week 5

 1. What did you actually learned from the unit.

I found the lectures interesting this week, there is so much to the management side of nursing that I don't always think about so it was interesting to think about that point of view.

2. Discuss your feelings/experiences from the team activities? Did it change your opinion on the subject? If so, how? If not, why?

Sometimes it can be hard to gauge the team activities just because we all do them at different times during the week. I work Saturday, Sunday and Monday nights, therefor I do most of my homework at the beginning of the week. I think a lot of my teammates wait until the weekend to do their homework and so I don't always get to learn from their opinions in that aspect.

3. How you will utilize the information learned in your nursing practice.

I think next time I meet with my manager for my quarterly review I will have more respect for the concepts and why they are utilized.

4. You personal feelings about the material covered.

As I said before, I thought it was very interesting and it pointed out a different aspect of nursing that I enjoyed learning about. I also enjoyed learning how other companies incorporate their employee evaluations and noticing the differences and a lot of the similarities in the company I work for even though they are totally different businesses.

Week Three ( Late Submission)

1.  What did you actually learned from the unit. To be honest, what I actually learned is to never get behind on my schoolwork again and turn things in on time!! I struggled this last week and I am not usually one to not turn in my assignments on time, I don't like it.  2. Discuss your feelings/experiences from the team activities? Did it change your opinion on the subject? If so, how? If not, why? The team activity was a learning expereince, we did ours incorrectly on the first submission but got it all squared away the second time.  3. How you will utilize the information learned in your  nursing practice. More interview questions to learn from.  4. You personal feelings about the material covered. Refer to number one, I struggled this particular week so I didn't really learn a whole lot unfortunately, other than I hate being late, turning in late assignments and don't ever want to put myself in this position again.

Firing-Discipline Interview

Have you ever had to fire an employee? (Kate) Yes, I have, multiple times.   What is the warning process you go through before terminating an employee? (Kate) Verbal waring, a performance review, a written warning and then a termination. What are some examples of situations that have warranted disciplining an employee? (Kate) Consistently being late for work, leaving the jobsite before they were supposed to. Stealing supplies/equipment. What are some examples of reasons why you most commonly fire people? (Megan)  Pretty much the same as I just said, haha. And also lack of performance is a big one. How many chances do you give your employees to fix behaviors before terminating them? (Megan)  Well because this is a privately owned business, I can be a little more lenient which is nice because it sucks to fire people. I don’t have a set number of chances; it is usually a case by case type of a situat...

Leadership Characteristics

  1.    Leadership requires personal mastery   – Nurses demonstrate leadership when they show competence and mastery in the tasks they perform. Nurses are deemed competent by means of a license to practice nursing (NLN 2010). 2.   Leadership is about values  – A leader has to have values, those they are leading follow these values  and learn from their leaders.  3.    Leadership is about service  – Not only are you serving patients, you are serving as a go to for your team of employees.  4.    Leadership is about people and relationships  – If you don't have a good relationship with your peers, you team, the people around you, your workplace will be miserable. If the charge nurse for the shift doesn't have a good relationship with his/her peers, the team will not function well and has potential to impact patient care.  5.     Leadership is contextual  – relating what you're doing in ...
