Reflective Journal week 10

  1.  What did you actually learned from the unit. At first I was like. "really, watching a show about mice and some small dudes in a bachelors program, c'mon now", but after I watched it, I can see the importance of it. I think change is hard for most humans, I think it happens at a time when we least expect it, making it even harder to adapt!! I am not so sure I learned anything new, however, it was a great reminder for me...change is constant and how we react to that change is what makes or break us.    2. Discuss your feelings/experiences from the team activities? Did it change your opinion on the subject? If so, how? If not, why? I don't believe we had a team activity this week which was a nice break to be honest, a great CHANGE if you will :).  3. How you will utilize the information learned in your nursing practice. I can not even begin to explain in words the change my unit has seen as we are the designated med/surg covid unit. We have seen SO MUCH CHANG...

Reflective Journal Week 9

  1.  What did you actually learned from the unit. I learned that I like organization, it really helps me succeed in most areas of life.  2. Discuss your feelings/experiences from the team activities? Did it change your opinion on the subject? If so, how? If not, why? We all struggled a bit with the disorganization of the assignment involved, none of us knew exactly what we were supposed to do but maybe that was the point (?). I just felt like we needed more information in order to staff appropriately, we weren't even sure how may employees we were staffing and just made it up on our own. It did not change my opinion, I thought staffing would be hard before and I still think that is the case. 3. How you will utilize the information learned in your nursing practice. I will have more compassion than I already have towards the nurses who create the schedule on my unit. We have been understaffed and we are at capacity lately, so that has been a challenge.  4. You persona...

Budget Interview

What is the biggest expense in your business? At this point in time it is probably the product. What is the most difficult part of creating a budget? Knowing how much product to order without completely over ordering because you dont want to have a bunch of product left over that doesn't sell. How often do you stay within your budget? Oh I have to stay in my budget, all the time. I am out of debt and plan to stay that way. I don't borrow money so my budget is very important to me. How do you determine where budget cuts will be made? It just depends, I try to glance at things every month and see where we are at, if we don't need something and what we can cut out. What happens when you are consistently over budget? (refer to question 3.) Have you ever had to lay off an employee because of a budget cut and what was that experience like? Yeah, I had to lay off Heber and Lucas recently when COVID hit, it is what it is. Is there any leeway in going over budget? As in, if you...

Reflective Journal Week 8

  1.  What did you actually learned from the unit.  I did not know that nurses in certain states, such as California are not able to practice at their full potential and level of training on their own and have to practice under a medical doctor. I learned the actual concepts of the future of nursing, expanding/improving education, more collaboration/leadership, promoting diversity and improving data.  2. Discuss your feelings/experiences from the team activities? Did it change your opinion on the subject? If so, how? If not, why? There wasn't a lot of team activities this week, the interview questions and the group discussions. Didn't change my opinion on anything, however I always enjoy reading what my group members write about.  3. How you will utilize the information learned in your nursing practice. I think I will utilize this in trying to remember that there is hope for the future, I work on the COVID floor and we are overwhelmed right now, this lesson...

Reflective Journal - week 7

  1.  What did you actually learned from the unit. I actually really liked this unit!! I feel like I had time to do what was expected of me, had time to complete my assignments, had time to actually learn from them as opposed to stress about what I haven't done/what needs to be done. I really enjoyed the interview this week as well and learned a lot about what it takes to keep your business going and the importance of maintaining professionalism as opposed to being your employees friends. I also learned a lot from my husband, his help with the budgeting module was very informative to me. It also brought insight as to why the facility I work for has to follow budget, when you are the RN the budget part can often times feel like a slap in the face, however I learned that a business has to make money.  2. Discuss your feelings/experiences from the team activities? Did it change your opinion on the subject? If so, how? If not, why? We only had the one team activity ...

Firing-Discipline Interview

Have you ever had to fire an employee? (Kate) Yes, I have, multiple times.   What is the warning process you go through before terminating an employee? (Kate) Verbal waring, a performance review, a written warning and then a termination. What are some examples of situations that have warranted disciplining an employee? (Kate) Consistently being late for work, leaving the jobsite before they were supposed to. Stealing supplies/equipment. What are some examples of reasons why you most commonly fire people? (Megan)  Pretty much the same as I just said, haha. And also lack of performance is a big one. How many chances do you give your employees to fix behaviors before terminating them? (Megan)  Well because this is a privately owned business, I can be a little more lenient which is nice because it sucks to fire people. I don’t have a set number of chances; it is usually a case by case type of a situat...

Performance Appraisal Interview

  1.      How long does a single performance appraisal typically take? (Kate) It just depends, on average I would say they take about 10 minutes, but some times you get employees with a lot of questions or what have you and those ones can take longer. 2.      How often do you conduct performance appraisals? (Kate) Umm we do them every quarter. 3.      Tell me about an experience when you had to discipline an employee. (Kate) I had to discipline an employee for not following policy and procedures, this employee violated the policy and procedures multiple times which I had to write them up for. 4.      What is your least favorite thing about performance appraisals? (Jaimie) Probably the paperwork involved, that is always annoying. I love getting together with my employees one on one but it is hard when I have to discipline someone. 5.      Do you feel that performance a...

Reflection week 6

  1.  What did you actually learned from the unit. I learned a lot about the firing and discipline process and how much it would suck to have to be in that position.  2. Discuss your feelings/experiences from the team activities? Did it change your opinion on the subject? If so, how? If not, why? The team activity was short this week so there wasn't a ton to learn. I always enjoy reading my teams contribution to our questions for the week. It is good to see different perspectives on that matter.  3. How you will utilize the information learned in your nursing practice. To be completely honest, I hope I never have to fire anybody or take any type of disciplinary action against anyone but of course that isn't real life. It was great insight to learn about.  4. You personal feelings about the material covered. I enjoyed it, I think there is always something to be learned, I just wish I had more time to commit to school. I will keep trying my best though b...
